While I was taking the lifters out with a magnet, the top plate came off of two lifters. Is that normal? I know they spin but didn't know if the top plates can come off.

They're shims and yes they come out :)

That's how you "adjust" valve lash on these engines
(DON'T mix them up)

Each Bucket and Shim must be kept together and in it's original hole if you're not reshimming.

When you're done working on the head, you should recheck the valve
lash regardless, because if it's wider than spec, you get a lot of tapping noise from the head.

^^ I believe that's what i've got... well atleast what I want to believe it is. I haven't got around checking the clearances. Usually the tappet noise happens been the 2k-2.5k range under or over that it quiets down...

Well it's been three years since i've put the engine in and it was making the noise at the beginning nothing's happened yet so... :dunno:

but i'm certain it's a noisy drive train, it pretty much sounds exactly like this..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqfGeJIogDw I'm just a bit too lazy to get around it atm..

Oh yeah IJ I was thinking of going shimless or was it called underbucket shims??.. later on down the track.... instead of just doing a valveshim adjustment. Where did you get yours from???

im in the process of getting a valve job done and the shop was saying probably 3 to 6 thousands cut to sink the valves. my question now is, how will i have to adjust the buckets.

You should let them do that for you as well. If they will cut the seat that much, you will have to get new shims that will be thinner to allow the correct lash clearance.

Look up valve adjustment in the TSRM.

Any Honda bike shop or Toyota. When you get the head back, do the measurements and let me know what sizes you need. I have a box full of OEM Toyota ones and custom sizes from Goodsoon Engine Builders.

You know what Andy. If you still have your 3 angle valve job head, I'll take it next year. I called the shop not to do the valves cause of the shims I'm looking for. I'm gonna spend about as much as what your looking for you head. I'll sell my head and buy yours next spring if you haven't sold it I hope.

i hate shims they will nickle and dime your wallet to hell iv seen guys sand them to the right spec to save a few bucks and never heard any bad outta doing it,you just gotta sand them uniformly! would i do it? damn right lmao did it on many streetbike, dirtbike and quad engines double and triple checked the shims afterwards to see if all was well, AND ALL WAS. ill let you guys know how sanding the shims on a 7mgte goes as after i put the car back together,I'm pulling the motor for a donor motor, and for cleaning purposes in a few months

so how can i check my valve clearance? i didnt want the shop to do a valve job due to my budget limit on me still getting more parts. i only built my head to stock specs so is it necessary to check for valve clearance or is it to slap the head back on and drive it?
