Supradupra.com 2.5TT Aero Limited JDM refurb (yUK)

Thanks guys, it's great so many others are interested in this too, makes it all a bit more worth while :)

Toyota just called me this morning to say all the 2j water pump parts are in early which is a result. I can head off there now and get stuck in fitting the 2j pump today, maybe even get it started again for this weekend!

Better go give them all my beer money then, T Total this weekend :)

Mate weak effort. You are not doing anything new.

HOLY FUCKING SHIT....THIS IS FUCKING NUTS.

It reminds me of my uncles house and the first time i saw his supra way back when.

I take my hat off to you buddy. I cannot begin to imagine what this has cost?

Welcome to the OCD club! :D

Great to have you here.

I gotta be honest though, you have quite a bit of colors going on. I can't help but to think of the volvo safety display car when I look at your build. A++++ on Effort! Keep it up!

Volvo-safety-4.JPG

Lol, I love the Volvo safety car, it must be all those childhood years building stuff from Lego:icon_bigg I also don't want to start imagining what this has cost me ... lets leave it at a lot of time & a fair bit of skin...

Anyhoo, due to a large volcanic hash cloud turning the yUK dopey, I find myself waiting on some pulleys to arrive from HK so I can get my engine running again. They left HK on the 27th so, this means they are already in this forsaken country being held up by, well, who the funk knows, something British & hopelessly 3rd world!!!

With this hold up I have been turning my attentions to some of the other improvements..? on the vehicle.

Now, you may have noticed with modern cars that w4nker lights are now officially fine to have on the front of your car. The germans with their company issue, common, disposable cars started the ball rolling - bmw's inventive, now overly common Satan eyes then aldi attempted to follow suit by applying some slightly less inventive Ebay light strip to the front of their (mainly diseasal) cars which looked a bit, well, aldi... Since then other manufacturers have followed suit & improved on them over & over & LED daytime lights are now common place.

Personally I very much liked Mercs take on them, set low down where the fogs are at a funky angle that complimented the lines of the front end nicely. They looked built in as opposed to an add on mod bought from the net & thankfully, unlike aldi, you don't see 1.5 million sleep inducing mercs when you nip to the shops, just a few 100... I wanted to incorporate this sort of system into the Supra as part of the lighting upgrades but, they had to look like they were there from day dot, factory fitted, invisible & of the correct brightness to actually function.

This only really left me one option - modifying the stock fog lights to incorporate w4nker lights.

It took a little bit of thinking, a lot of research & trial of light sources. I did not have space to install 1w luxeon LEDs & TBH, it's no longer necessary to use such a bulky LED source. Only 1 fog light was sacrificed in the making of this project!

The light source I chose was a daylight white SMD strip with integral drive circuit. This stuff is quite superb, I have actually installed lengths to light whole rooms on jobs now, it' a great product.

I wanted to pick out the shape of the fogs in daylight readable dots, similar to the merc lights that inspired me in the first place.

I disassembled a fog to see how things went together, sadly, the fogs are manufactured in a way that means they will not come apart as the glue is silicone based so, impervious to heat. This meant anything had to be done covertly with the housing intact on the real run.

I made up some aluminium formers which followed the lines of the internal reflector exactly, the LED source mounted to these & then got sprayed chrome the same as the light reflector.

p1559603_1.jpg

By very carefully drilling an access hole in the corner of the lights, hard up to the glass, it was possible to install these assemblies between the reflector lip & the front glass. They are interference fit with the final part shaped in a way that allows it to push home tight & clamp.

The access hole is invisible & resealed. The outcome was this:

p1559603_2.jpg

Offered up to the car (held together by air & luck) They look like this: These are incredibly hard to photograph as they are as bright as manufacturer w4nker lights, hopefully the pics are good enough to give the idea.

Modified to attempt a "human eye" perspective.

p1559603_5.jpg

Can you make them out inside the cluster?

p1559603_6.jpg

These lights will run during the day along with just the red corner markers built into my LED rears. I am undecided weather or not to keep them on with side lights, possibly dimming them down a bit for then, I'll have to see.

The fogs still function completely normally, no changes required. It was nice to get away from hydraulic fluid for a day!!!

Update Nov 2010:

It's been a while since I updated these build threads so, thought it was a bout time seeming as outside in the yUK is now a no go area for the next 6 months....

This car has actually been on the road since June 2010, in weekly use day or night, mainly dry weather but, not opposed to taking it out in the rain & it's even been salted thanks to a rather over zealous council whom will run out of salt when we actually need it....

April

While while waiting for 2jz water pump parts & pulleys to arrive I diverted attention to less important stuff, one of these items was daytime running lights as in my post above so, I shan't go into those again in this reply :)

A dedicated thread for these is located HERE.

May

The 2jz water pump arrived, this is a direct fit onto the 1jz with the hydrofan system removed.

http://www.forum.mkiiisupra.net/showthread.php?p=324043#post324043

Pump installed & fluid refilled, no leaks this time!

p1642080_1.jpg

Hydrofan system binned for twin electric fans from a Ford Mondeo. These Siemens fans really shift some serious air & the cowling fits perfectly. Again, a dedicated thread can be found HERE on the retrofitting of these fans.

p1642080_2.jpg

The fans fit into the 1jz with a small amount of modification to the cowling plastics to clear the boost pipes & huge Koyo rad. On the 7M these just drop in.

Little ally brackets fabed up use the stock mounts on the rad.

p1642080_3.jpg

Stock look once 2jz pulleys were fitted up, the serpentine belt stays stock too.

p1642080_4.jpg

To aid cooling I made up a solid front part to the under tray out of ally sheet. This replaces the front part of the plastic under tray diverting all ram air through the coolers & also strengthens the front lip - bonus.

p1642080_5.jpg

p1642080_6.jpg

A small mod was carried out to the stock 1jz fan ECU that allowed it to interface with the electric fans & run as if stock. I also incorporated a dual speed system to simulate the constant movement of the hydrofan along with full pelt on demand cooling from the fan ECU & manual override switch.

In addition there is also a timed cool off period that runs the fans after engine shut off.

p1642080_7.jpg

The slow fan speed dropper resistor is a stock fuel pump dropper while I used spare fuel pump relays I had to control the rest of the fan system, all bolt up to existing threaded holes in the chassis.

Car all back together complete for the first time in months!

Front end with DRLs fitted properly.

DRLs with sides.

p1642080_11.jpg

Rear end with rear DRLs on in corners. These dim at night as part of the tail lights & serve with the brake lights too.

p1642080_12.jpg

Electronic with remote trunk release fitted - having to use a lever to open the trunk always was & always will be one of the dumbest ideas ever!

The switch lights blue when the system is active, pressing it operates the trunk solenoid. The system is all interlocked with the central locking & alarm for remote operation also.

June 21st 2010

Off to Surrey Rolling Road to get the thing tuned by Ryan G.

We did hit a slight snag with regards turbo boost flat lining at XX point, almost as if a valve is controlling it perfectly - this is being dealt with on a different thread.

The MAP has just been set to work the car below this threshold at present &, when I can be bothered I'll look into the issue. Driveability is not effected by this problem, just top end power.

One of the Syvecs never ending screens.

p1642080_15.jpg

Once al the mapping was done for this session I was able to mount the Syvecs ECU properly.

Update Nov 2010:

With the car back on the road & all the shakedown complete I enjoyed the car over the summer months as weather allowed, taking it out any excuse. It's an absolute dream to drive & feels like a new car.

Handling is impressive, the powers great even if we are short by about 120 BHP at present Lol.

July & Sept 2010

Just tweaking really from here on.

Temporary control panels fabricated for the Syvecs & traction control systems, along with other new electronics installed during build.

p1642080_17.jpg

Pass view - This is really hard to photograph as the digital cameras make blue light look like the sun!

p1642080_18.jpg

p1642080_19.jpg

The trunk build got a revisit. I formed a dropped down section behind the rear seats to make use of wasted space, reduce the speaker baffle to improve resonance characteristics & split the build into 2 pieces which allows it to lift out without the need to remove the strut brace & forward targra holders.

p1642080_20.jpg

I also lit the Audison amps to match the trunk lighting & installed some crafty hidden lights to the targra holders so they can be found nice and easy at night. These come on with the trunk light.

p1642080_21.jpg

This is just a bit of fun, I made this circuit up about 14 years ago & it's been a kind of standing joke / trade mark ever since - I give you KITT Lol.

So, that's it for now, the car is on the road, in full use & has been for 6 months now. There's still plenty to do restoration wise, the next big thing being the bodywork which will be undertaken after christmess.

I also have the boosting issue to investigate but, TBH, the thing drives so well without the addition power at present I just want to enjoy that for a bit instead of pulling things apart again - you never knw, it may even fix it's self .... yeah rite!

Shiny car ready to deploy.

Wow man

I was wondering what had happened with this build, and now we have the answer

Excellent work I like that you have made alot of progress and all quality work too

And by the way the scanner rocks, maybe you could paint the car silver on the bottom half and call it K.A.R.R.

I just want you to know that this is such great inspiration. Your build is partly a reason why I'm going to fully restore my Supra. I've rented a workshop from january, and going to at some point take up a loan for £10k.

I honestly think you've pretty much convinced me to get a 1JZ. Cleanest, meanest looking motor bay I've ever seen. The custom digital dash actually reminds me of the stock AE86 digital dash...BUT WAY F**KING COOLER. Mostly because it's in a Supra.

I'm in absolute shock and awe at the electronic excellence everywhere in this ride, even if you're using a few more LEDs than I would...keep up the amazing work. And post more wiring diagrams! Those really help those of us like me who are learning all of this by doing, and are especially interesting where you're adding new convenience features and systems that the old Supras never had.

- Cheers from the US, Jeremy.
