Well, in the for what its worth catagory:
Doing what others suggested worked brilliantly. Just drop the tail of the trans, and get the two top bolts with about 3 feet of extensions (a couple of wobbly's in the chain helps as well). In hindsight, that would have been a good way to get the top starter bolt out as well. I took my fan shroud off too be safe, but as it turns out that was uneeded. Maybe my motor mounts are just in really good shape, but the motor wants to sit neutrally balanced on them. I did in fact have to jack up the front of the motor to put the trans back on though.

There would be no way to just slide the tranny back far enough to work on the clutch. I needed to take mine to the pressure wash anyways. So I took it all the way out. Makes for geting to the plate and flywheel easy, and making sure I did a proper job.

Im kinda hoping to sell this car to someone in the community, so I took extra care to make sure I did the job right, and Im also fixing anything else I see while in under there.

doing a clutch on this car is pretty easy. doing it on the w58 is even easier because you dont have to remove the clutch fork and it is a lot lighter than the r154. i will never ever do it again though in my backyard. it was a real pain in the ass to get the car high enough to get the tranny out. that, and it hurts!

ill only do a clutch in the shop. with the lift it makes it 100x easier.

and to the guy who said use 7 feet of extensions, what the fuck are you talking about?
