The damper thing bolted behind the driver's side motor mount. Looks like it's function is to absorb vibration due to the engine trying to torque over, or something. Am I right?

Is it a wear item? Something I should look at replacing, since I am pulling the motor?

they jucked em when they went to the different style motor mounts

the torque damper and motor mounts are very strong, I've heard the DSM guys like our torque damper as it's an upgrade for em...

I kept mine (wow, 2 more bolts when dropping the motor back in, big woop, toyota put it there for a reason...)

They changed in '90, according to the EPC.

I (obviously) have it on my '88 :) I may see exactly how strong it is, and if it's weak, I'll replace it. What the hell, extra damping never hurt

They changed in 01/89, the same time the changed the engine mounts.

Ahh... Hey Jeff, any idea how 'strong' it should be? Feels sloppier than a worn out shock to me. I'll probably go ahead and replace it :)

I come from a land down under
Dow: Mine feels a little "loose" but it has SSV so the faster the deflection is the harder it gets.

My mounts were 75% torn through and it was the only thing keeping the left mount from tearing through at 500+ rwhp.

I had to mod mine a bit to clear the Group A pan but it just meant removing a little of the NVH weight at the bottom.

I've been looking at pictures of the stock motor mount... if nothing else, it looks like I can modify a GM poly tranny mount ($26 @ autozone) into a poly motor mount.

the only thing I could see that would need help on the dampner is the bushings on the ends, I'd replace em with endlink bushings if needed...

I'm going to, but I'm mainly concerned with the stiffness (or lack, thereof) of it. If nothing else, I suppose it's better than a chain. I'm going to disassemble it while I'm waiting on my machine work, and see what I can build from it.
