well for a little while now I figured my drive shaft support bearing was toast but after closer inspection it seems to have been replaced already.... Rubber looks to be in great shape and the metal looks some what new and not weathered...

So I started shakeing things around and noticed that where the drive shaft slips into the ass of the transmission there is alot of side to side play... I'm pretty sure that's not right LOL!

Issues:
1. Driveshaft gets hot to the touch after a short period of driveing
2. Once over 45mph I get a bad humming (very loud)
3. Alot of vibration throught the car and definetly in the stick
4. At 60 mph its just scary... Only pushed it once to test
5. When rolling to a stop with clutch out I can't hear faint grinding noise but not gears grinding
6. Bran spanking new tires on all 4 corners and suspension feels fine
7. Trans leaks out of rear seal
So this is a w58 trans and I'm wondering has any of you had this happen...and is this as simple as getting a new bearing that goes in the tail of the trans or is there more then one bearing...I also heard something about a babbot bearing don't really know whats inside the tail of these transmissions.

So basicly I'm asking what parts should I get or is toyota gonna rape me so bad that I may be better off getting another trans?

Glad I found my problem the day before I was gonna get a solid drive shaft!

I had a bad output shaft bearing on my w58. It mad a loud whining sound in any gear but 4th. It doesn't really sound like you have the same problem, but any transmission stuff is hard to diagnose without having it torn down and looked at by a pro. :(

Humming usually does indicate a bad bearing. That doesn't mean it is the ds support bearing. Can you make the noise go away at 45mph from turning the wheel side to side?

A dented driveshaft will vibrate horrendously.

and i had a pro look at it and he quoted me $550 to fix the issue because he had to the the trans off....told him no damn way cause you dont need to drop the trans to get to the rear bearing (you just cant trust mechanics these days)

Actually, I'm pretty certain that you have to tear down the transmission to get at the output shaft bearing. The only thing you can get at with the tranny still on the car is the output shaft seal.

the back of the trans is removeable...only a few bolts holds the tail houseing.

2 people that know what they're talking about have just told you otherwise and you're still arguing?

Make this 3 people...

To change the output shaft bearing the trans needs to be removed and totally disassembled.

If the Bush in the Extension housing is trashed and allowing the play you describe you'd be better off sourcing another w58 to swap in they're not expensive.

Just something else to check...

I used to have a hum/drone from under my 89. Eventually that became a hum/drone/constant scraping sound. Finally found out that the problem was the front bearing on the diff. Disconnected the input and output shafts from the diff so I could spin it by hand and there it was.

those didn't seem like sure answers to me... More like an educated guess... But now that you (IJ) say for sure that the trans needs to come appart then ok no more questioning from me! Not arguing just looking for some for sure answers.

Now as far as the faint metal on metal sound... It sounds like its comeing from right under the center consel could that still be the rearend?

Today I went to a junk yard and they had no access to a w58 or r154 so where does one need to go in Philly to find this crap?

May look like I have to buy that parts car near me : (

now I have had wheel bearings go before and it hummed and droned out and when you turned a certain direction it stoped... This is not like that at all... It alot louder the faster you go and shakes the shit out the car and by that I mean the dash shakes, rear view shakes, back hatch won't stfu, its almost like I have a huge sub woofer pounding out heavy bass!

Yeah it definetly doesn't drone... Just gets worse.

Well actually it may drone but is so loud and in your face that I'm actually scared to see...not for the cars sake but for my own personal safety..who knows what could happen if it broke!
