My Goals and Your Thoughts

I have an 89 hardtop that recently made 248 whp and 290 ft lbs on a Mustang Dyno with the following mods:

- Stock CT26 @ 14.5 psi
- 3" defcon downpipe (eliminates the turbo elbow and is 3 inches from the turbo to the exhaust)
- high flow cat
- HKS dragger exhaust
- HKS Mega-Flow intake (I'm changing this as the mushroom filter is garbage)
- Blitz electronic boost controller
- Blitz BOV
- HKS 3000 pipe (not really sure what it's called)
- Lexus AFM
- 550 injectors
- fjo wideband O2 sensor
- spearco intercooler with hardpipes
- RPS clutch
- full compliment of gauges

Now, the car is very reliable, all maintenance is up to date, and the car is fairly fast but, I know I want more. When I'm going full throttle I am left wanting more. I can't peg a number on how many more horses but I know that anything more than another 100 whp is overkill for my purposes. With that in mind I'm trying to plan out some conservative upgrades that won't break the bank or kill reliability completely.

I thinking a 57trim CT26, Walbro fuel pump, Aeromotive FPR should do the trick for the power I want. Aside from installing a MHG and ARP head studs, does anyone have any recommedations? Anything you think I may really need or not need?

All input is appreciated, thanks everyone!

Mustang dyno's tent to dyno lower then a dyno jet but you have a very stout starting place.

But as FT said also add in a SAFCII of some piggy back fuel controller, your list looks to be pretty good otherwise. Also once you start going for higher #'s remember to upgrade your clutch.

Thanks ForcedTorque and 92nsx.

I have a RPS 6-puck clutch but I've been hearing bad things about them so I may not install it and opt for something different.

Any idea what the ideal boost would be for a 57 trim? I'm thinking 14 psi with the mods I mentioned would be sufficient.

with the mods you have you should be near 300 if not over it.. i think the main thing you are missing is a safc for tuning. You gave your car 550s and a lex but no tune. You get the safc and tune and see where your at then, you will unlock alot of power doing so ;) I dyno'd on a mustang dyno and made 245hp and 280ft lbs. on 9psi!! only mod i had was open down pipe..lol everything else was stock.

you mentioned getting a .57 turbo, those are good up to about 400hp with a good tune. Before you get a larger turbo you should consider geting SAFC and a metal head gasket.

I have very similar mods to you, except I have the mapecu2 for tuning...

I made 280hp on an unopened engine with a stock CT26 at 13psi.

Very good point! This thread mentions just about every performance mod that have (some names are different tho). The only thing mentioned here that I don't have is the MHG. If only I could make a clutch work, I'd be tuned and dyno'd.

The stock headgasket, properly torqued BEFORE it starts to go kaput, can take alot more than 300rwhp on a really good tune but it will be very unforgiving to detonation. If the stock gasket has any weakness in it whatsoever, cranking the boost with the lex/550 combo will find it and explode it.

I think SupraCentral's MkIII makes over 300rwhp on the stock headgasket.

All this talk of headgaskets leads me to another question; which thickness should I go with for my goals? If I know I'm staying somewhere around 350-400 rwp, which mhg is recommended? I figured a 2mm would be fine but not sure.

Thanks for all the replies so far!

Your headgasket thickness is determined by the deck height of the block and whatever has been removed from the cylinder head. If you've removed xxx amount from both, they should be measured. Then add up the numbers to get your actuals, and get the appropriate gasket to get back to stock cr. gl.
