Don't grind the valve stem

Just put my engine together runs great except that it sounds like a deisel.
I pulled the valve covers and found the clearances to be .019 to .021 on the exhaust side. I am thinking that when the machine shop "rebuilt" the head they probably cut .010 off all of the valve stems as this would be standard procedure on an American V8.

Anyone else have this happen?
Do they make oversive adjustment shims?

I'll quote some TSRM numbers that may help:
- Standard valve overall length: 98.15mm (3.8642")
- Minimum valve overall length: 97.75mm (3.8484")

Shims go from 2.5mm to 3.3mm in thickness. There is no mention of oversize. Aftermarket?

You can purchase shims outside of the traditional Toyota supply chain that are a bit thicker but dont pay over seven bucks a piece. I dont know why they would have trimmed your valve stems - do you have regrinds? That could have opened up your clearances too.

The only reason they would or should have cut down your valve stems is to set the valve stem height if they cut the seat and/or the face of the valve. By cutting those they would have to trim the valve stem or you wouldnt get enough clearance between the puck and the cam.

Yesterday I went to the local Pick n Pull now there are a lot of old Corollas with no shims! I was able to find several that will work. 48 shims for $5.00, not too bad for an hours work!

What are the clearances supposed to be on the exhaust side? Are yours in English or metric? I thought it was supposed to be around .2-.3mm? I can't remember. Anyway, I bought them from www.Goodson.com
Much cheaper than factory.
