Compressor Surge ("wastegate Chatter") w/Apexi Intake???

First off, my '88 Turbo is COMPLETELY stock, with the exception of the new Apexi Power Filter I just put on...

I noticed my stock air filter was pretty nasty, so I went ahead and ordered an Apexi Power Filter (after a bit of research, I decided I wanted to go with the Apexi over the Blitz, K&N or HKS). I received it on Saturday, and put it in right when I got it...

After finishing up, I took the car out for a run and noted that the turbo spooled up quicker and had a very strong / nice sound to it... however whenever I let off the accelerator I get the "chatter" or "rattlesnake" noise (pretty loud when I have a good spool)... I am running normal boost on a stock CT-26 with NO other mods to my car. It does this EVERY time I let off when there is boost, unless I very slowly/gently back off the accelerator... Is this normal? Is this something I should be concerned about?

It sounds cool as hell, but I know compressor surge is not the greatest for a turbo... I guess I was under the impression that the chatter doesn't usually happen unless you run higher amounts of boost...

Thanks in advance for any help,

-James

stock BOV is dead.

pull it off and test.

it's not WG chatter, it's compressor surge...i.e. your turbo being beaten to death.

as "cool" as it may sound it is NOT a good thing.

Thanks guys, that's what I was afraid of... I'll check it out.

Dr. Jones, no worries, as I said I knew it wasn't a good thing, and I added "wastegate chatter" in quotes just to get more draw to the thread.

Get something other than Toyota on this thing, that's one of the few time's I'll ever say get an aftermarket replacement over the Toyota stuff ;). The Bosch BOV is a good one to use that doesn't involve much modding to make it work in the factory position. The stocker really can't handle high boost if that's what you're going for later on down the road.

What's your definition of "high boost"? For now I plan to keep the car stock with just the Apexi to let it breath a tad better... Down the line, I only have bolt-ons planned (3" exhaust, downpipe/turbo elbow, high-flow cat and hks "3000" pipe). I don't really intend to go overboard, and all that stuff is in the next couple years. A buddy of mine has offered me a hybrid CT-26 that I may get and play around with, but I have no plans to use it for a while (it will hold around 15lbs of boost).

Because if you're going to stay close to stock (like he is right now) might as well keep it simple, cheap, and effective ;). GReddy and HK$ aren't always the cure all solution ;).

15lbs should be fine on a Bosch.

I don't know, I got an HKS SSQV but then again my plans are uncertain, if jesse's 2jzge NA-T setup isn't much more in cost than the damn 1jz swap I may go that route, or I may build my 7M, It's kinda a pain though. I wish I'd have gone psycho and gotten a Turbonetics Godzilla just for the fun of it but the SSQV wasn't too expensive since I was already doing hardpipes.

The choice is yours man, both will work fine for a stockish car like yours. I mainly advised this one to you because you're almost bone stock right now. If you have higher boost (+15 psi) in your future, then the 110 or a pull type BOV recirculated would be the way to go ;).

Hey, ok... Now I'm really confused... I've been doing research on-line, and I've come across many videos of people demonstrating their blow-off valve "flutter"... I have also come across sites selling BOVs stating that some turbo BOVs will "flutter" as to not release all pressure at once (where as others just let out the "pssssssssssssss")...

I gotta clarify something... I've never had a turbo vehicle before, always N/As, so I may just be paranoid (I'm learning, and better safe than sorry)... Check out the video below and let me know if the sound you hear is normal... Mine is very similar to that, except a bit more pronounced...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBULZV81zuQ

Is there a difference between "flutter" and "chatter"?

Is anyone able to post a sound clip or vid of what the stock Supra BOV should sound like?

Thanks,

-James
