I just checked TDC on my motor and the crank pully is off by about 10 degrees

I used a long ratchet extension in #1 spark plug hole and when going from 10 to 0 it is already on its way down

TDC on my motor seems to be at about the 10 degree mark

Does that mean the crank pully is trashed??

I've checked mine quite a few times over the years. Something is definitely out of whack, might be the pulley. Not very likely that you've twisted the crank, but it's still within the realm of possibility.

If the harmonic balancer is pointing at 0 degrees, and cylinder 1 is not at TDC, then your woodruff key is probably fubar :(

I suppose it could be the balancer itself but I haven't heard of that one yet

just pulled the pully off and everything seems to be ok

the woodruff key looks a little beat up but it seemed to be in there right

can you order a new woodruff key from toyota?

so there is 2 parts to the crank pully and the bond connecting them can brake causing the outside pully with the notch to read incorrectly??

is that right ^

i can snap a pic of the pully real quick could you tell if its ok

I come from a land down under
I just pull #1 plug slide a chopstick in then turn the crank slowly watching the chopstick rise, when it stops check the timing mark, if the pully is ok it'll line up with the 0 on the timing case.

Should the place for the woodruff key and the notch be lined up?

the key looks like shit and it dosn't fit in the notch tight at all it wobbles around and will fall out if you don't hold it there

ok well if you don't have one handy don't worry I will go by c&n performance tomorrow they have a bunch of mk3s there and spare 7m engines. I picked up a cps from them today but looked like i had more problems than that

Thanks again for your help!! The world would be a much better place if everyone helped one another!!

Most 7M dampers you'll find will be in the same boat.

You don't have many options, new is a joke price wise and ATI's is a bit pricy.

Not sure about there but here there's a few places that can rebuild/rebond them and this is cost effective.

Another alternative would be to fit a new Key bolt it down to 195 ft/lbs do the chopstick thing again (less chance of hurting parts than an extension)

When it stops just remark the Damper at 0 with a white paint marker and be happy :)

Anytime you play with timing in the future you'd need to verify it hasn't slipped and remark if it has.
