I spent $1000 on a 95' civic ex i found a couple months ago. "Mods" are complete exhaust system replacement($220), chipped p28 ecu($75), battery($80), and stereo($120). It's primered grey. Clean title. 200k miles, needs a wheel stud and new struts. overall, more than $1000.

I found an 87' supra turbo, removable top, 5 speed. told the guy lets make a trade. only catch engine is "knocking":aigo:. The owner had a shop do some work: new head gasket, a.r.p. head studs, valves + a new alternator ect. to hopefully make the car run better. replaced those parts, 2500 dollars later drove it and eventually it started to knock.

i asked if i could look at the car and i liked it. everything besides the knock. he agreed to tow the supra to my place. im determined to have this thing running asap. he said it would turn on so i can hear the knock but i chose to not risk it to wait till its torn apart.

do you think it is worth the trade? and where should i start with this project? should i try to "re-build" this block? is it possible the head is damaged, too?

If its not a rust bucket and has a full interior it's worth it. You looking at 1000 to 1500 to fix the engine

Rip out the engine
Tear it down. And do a light rebuild. New bearings. Deck block and head. Mhg and arps. And you should be good

of course if you have the money I would put new rings, hone the walls, valve job, and so on and so on.

If this is it first supra just letting you know you can cut corners in a Honda and it won't be a big deal. U cut corners and buy cheap stuff for this car and engine it will bite u hard. Do i it once and do it it right.

I'm not saying you don't have any money or anything I'm just letting you know that you should do some research on what ur getting into before u buy a supra

If I sound like a dick I didn't mean to just being straight with u. These cars are great when there done correctly do ur research and u should be fine

Judging from the look of the car, hell ya its worth it. You could part out the car and over double the money...

However, if you like the car and want to revive it (hoping you do), its well worth it. Ztrain25 told you the proper story.. do it right, do it once. But don't overlook hoses, electrical wiring fixes/upgrades, etc.. while the engine is getting that rod knock fixed. You can buy a built shortblock for about 2200 to drop in it (its a bit more $$ as redoing yours really, however its a package deal, no dicking around...)

Only do it if you have a daily driver already though. It takes time to do the car right and rushing it because you need to drive to work isn't going to cut it.

I suggest you read the build threads in this forum a lot... :)

Good stories/info in there that will start you into the land that is Supra. Not many people on this earth are blessed/cursed with these cars.

my plan is to first re build the engine the right way, of course. then lower it, upgrade the brakes and start from there. engine wise i want to if possible while i am at it beef the block up. im hoping that the head isnt damaged at all and that the block is the only weak link. if thats the case the operation wont be too much of a hassle. all i'd have to do is either rebuild the block or like said buy one that's already prepped. and yes do i have a daily driver while this car will be worked on.

my first supra had a 1ggte in it and i never was lucky enough to figure out the wiring to get it running. this 87 with the 7m is a completely different powerplant so i know finding what i need to get this running wont be as difficult. my main question was whether or not it was worth the trade and my question was answered. i got a dirt cheap deal on the honda so i know im not really losing money at least not just yet. when all is said and done this supra will perform not like a honda and thats what i want. something different. like a boosted inline 6 that has plenty of potential. i already had a gsr in a civic hatch with a t3 garrett. nothing special right? so this should be worth the $ hopefully at the end.

the first thing ive learned about owning a toyota supra, is to have a backup car/vehicle. the car is worth the trade, but id rather just save up and pay cash for it and keep the civic as a daily...just my 2 cents.

edit: derrrrrrr, im special sometimes...just re read the post above. nevermind.

if the block/crank is beyond repair id just work on a 1j or 2j swap. im a 7m fan, dont get my wrong...but it takes A LOT of time to get it right. and just when you get all the mechanical done, all the electrical say fuck you :: angry ::

Good luck man. Like said above ur gunna love the car and hate it. I sit there when its in the garage and say why the fuck do I spend so much money on this thing. Then u drive and all that goes away. There great cars.

And if I have a daily drive then you will be alset. My car is sitting on jack stands in the garage waiting for the front wheels to come in. So aslong as you have other car or cars to drive the supra should come out good.

Put some more pics of it on here
