Ok I finally have enough done to put up my build thread. First the back-story, I owned RMJ Motorsports for 7 year and have built many different Drift and streetcars, Many an Rx-7, S13/S14 w/ Sr20’s, RB and 1jz motors, SC300’s as well as a few Corollas and a host of other cars, even Hondas, lol. Closed the doors in June 2008 after a good run and two years finishing in the top three of the Formula D Pro-Am series. Economy sucked, lease was up, owed no money and had a great offer on the table with my current job, and it was time to move on.

Now I had time to work on my own projects for a change. Picked up a 1jz full motor set for 800 off of a local guy that had bought it with a spun bearing, installed into a Volvo and had no money to fix it. I had a 2jzge bottom sitting in storage, so I figured hell 1.5JZ something new for me and it would be sick in my S13 I had at the time. Well as fate would have it the S13 got hit, insurance totaled it, I got fair market value ($3000.00) for it. Sold the parts off it and was left with a 1jz motor in my garage with no car. Decided to get something different, that I do not see much of, the MKIII Supra was the candidate.

My fiancé found the Supra, 1986.5 non-turbo with 116,000 miles on it and only two owners, both brothers. Car was repainted the original Mahogany Brown Pearl by the previous owners. Did not like it at first, but it has grown on me. Car had no rust, not damaged and all stock.

The build begins, picked up TEIN Super Street coilovers, some XXR 962’s, Arizona Performance Wilwood 13” brakes. Car needed a new rack and pinion and tune up, ran great. Went to Shineauto to pick up a front lip and the motor was next, it was time to gather the parts over the next 8 months.

The 1jz was pretty beat, not well taken care of and the Head was questionable. First up was full tear down of the motor. Luckily the cam journals were unscored and looked good. 2jzge block was disassembled and along with the head was taken down to Indio Motor and Machine (IMM). They are 3 hours away from me, but have used them for years and the can do everything in house and they rock. The block was cleaned, the turbo oil outlets were drilled out and tapped to M12x1.25, the intake and exhaust side oil galleys were connected and both sides cleaned again. The cranked, rods, and pistons were balanced and blue printed.

Before taking it to IMM, Glenn (best friend and partner in crime) owner of Illicit Performance ported both sides and the combustion chambers. The head then went back to IMM and received a 3-angle valve job and the valves were shortened to match the existing shims.

The motor was in pieces and back at Glenn’s house. We rechecked oil clearances and found out that IMM had gotten everything perfect, as expected. CC’s the head and did some calculating and found out that with the 1.52mm Cometic Head Gasket, my compression would be about 9.5:1. With the stock twins at 12psi, this should be good with killer response. In the future a new turbo system will go in to compliment the build, with the higher compression methanol injection will be added and controlled by the Haltech. This is just like we do with many daily driven, built RX-7’s.

Here is the 75% assembled motor on the engine stand

Due to budget I had to stick with the stock 1jz twins for now, hooked up to an aftermarket Y-pipe to reduce EGT’s. Due to the taller bottom-end some custom oil feed lines were made with the help of Oxnard Hose (welded –4 AN male fitting to the stock 1jz oil tubes) and Orme Brothers (all line components). The stock 1jz fuel line from the pulsation damper to the rail was too short, Orme Bros. stepped in again with a custom line and banjo fittings.

Stock twins and Y-pipe mocked up on the block before build

Took the old intake manifold and charge pipes off and took a whole day of hand scrubbing and painting. Left all the casting marks on and painted them with aluminum silver engine paint for a clean stock look.

Pipes all clean and looking good

On the front of the motor I used the OEM 2jzgte oil pump, timing components and lower timing cover. Also the 1jz lower timing gear, you need this cause it has the teeth for the Crank Sensor pick-up. 2jz water pump, 1jz P/S pump, A/C (yes it will have A/C dammit) and a rebuilt alternator (Franco’s Auto Electric in LA, they can do anything starter or alternator related).

Due to the position of the OEM Power-steering pump, I decided to add a power steering cooler and re-route the lines. Used the Driftmotion P/S braided high-pressure line. Also added an engine oil cooler, both coolers from Baker Precision. The front mount intercooler is off of our old Pro Am drift car and was custom mounted by Paul at Little People Customs (LPC) (a hot rod shop, but good friend and can do anything), LPC also added the EGT flange to the y-pipe, the BOV flange and sealed the OEM BOV hole.

Boost will be read and controlled by an Apex AVC-R, AEM Wideband to watch the fuel and a Greddy EGT.

The motor is completely assembled and in the car should be on the road in the next couple of weeks. Glenn will be building the Haltech harness for it and giving it a break-in tune. Below is a list of parts I used, feel free to ask away.

I may have missed some things, but ask if you have any questions. Can’t wait to drive it. I have a lot of thank you’s for a lot of help. Nothing was free, but whatever help was given is greatly appreciated. Most of the work was done either at Glenn’s or my house, by myself or Glenn with the help of the homies.

Thanks:

Brian and his pops – Indio Motor and Machine: Simply the best machine shop I have worked with
Paul – Little People Customs: hell of a fabricator.
Andy – Arizona Performance: Brake upgrade
Nick – Atomic Speedware: All internal components
Michael – Champion Toyota: The man with all the Toyota parts
Aaron – Driftmotion: lots of help and great parts
Joel – Orme Brothers: everything and anything for custom lines
Bob – Oxnard Hose: custom welded –4 AN fittings to the stock 1jz oil lines.

A great huge thanks to my best friend and the man behind the madness we create, Haltech install and tuner, Glenn – Illicit Performance.

And of course all my friends, family that helped our and got their hands dirty and my best support my Fiancé Rose.

Great work on the build so far! Although i'm a little puzzled by the work you've put in on the internals and yet are sticking with the stock twins.? the stock 2j will handle a hell of a lot more hp than the twins will make so i'm guessing you have a turbo upgrade in the future?
Great work so far and look forward to more updates.

Well, I don't go half ass on a buiild and basically I ran out of cash when I got to the turbo's, lol.

I will be upgrading to a nice turbo system hopefully in the next 6-12 months

Here is what I got done before I left for vacation on Weds.
