    Clutch recommendations

My clutch has gone wonky, and my best guess is that one of the rubber blobs in the friction plate has died and fallen out. About 10 years ago, I had a shop rebuild the engine, and they put in a new clutch at the same time. If I had known that Aisin cheapened out at some point, I would not have...

    W58 year differences

Does anyone know if an 89+ W58 manual transmission will fit in a pre-89 car? Seems to me that it should. The Wikipedia article on the W-series suggests the only difference is the 89+ has a steel sandwich plate. They drawings in the Cygnus EPC look very similar, but I wouldn't bet on the accuracy...

    Passed my final emissions test!

My last emissions test on my '88 NA was yesterday and I thought I'd share the results. Since it'll be 25 years old (from the model year) in 2013, I won't need another test. It passed again this time, though with less margin than last time. This is a treadmill/dyno test done at the same station...

    Speedometer Cable Install Issue

This weekend I finally had some time to replace the long section of the speedometer cable on my '88 NA. After 226,000 miles it was time. (Plus, it was a chance to reinstall the ABS light which has been out since I bought the car 17 years ago...) Most of the operation wasn't too annoying...

    Brake Booster Rebuild?

So, my brake booster has started to leak. It's not bad, but I don't like it. I see that Toyota sells a rebuild kit. Has anyone rebuilt their booster? The TSRM doesn't say anything about it. It does look a bit like the booster is crimped shut. The booster is like $700 new from Toyota. Wow. The...

350Z and it's microscopic oil filter

So, I have a 2004 350Z with about 35k miles on it. When I bought it I got a book of coupons for oil changes by the dealer so I let them change it every 2500 miles. Shortly after 30k, I decided to switch to synthetic oil and do my own changes and discovered that the oil filter is tiny! The spec...

    Sad.

I was perusing the Washington Post's Thursday Fairfax Extra and saw this. Here's a very sad photo of a white '87 turbo, plateless and behind a fence because the 18-year-old driver did something very stupid: racing with a cop watching. Just thought I'd share. Asterix

    Birdcage of Doom...

So, I head out to run some errands and 4 miles from my house, my birdcage lights up. I quickly find a place to turn and stop, easily under a minute from when I saw the warning light. After a tow home and some inspecting, I find that the heater valve body is broken on the engine side. I lost...

    Toyota's LSD configuration?

The aftermarket LSDs all specify if they're 1-, 1.5-, or 2-way. Does anyone know how the stock Toyota 4.3 LSD is set up? Mine works great with the right amount of slip additive in the oil. It's quiet but I can definitely feel it pulling both tires when accelerating. I'm planning on replacing the...
