Your cps may be a tooth off? not sure if the egr code will cause drivability unless it is stuck open for reason? check and make sure your cps is aligned properly. did you ever pull the cover off? if you did not chances are its not in proper
I would def start with basics before adding or upgrading. Making sure you have a good reliable engine to start with is good grounds for good hp along with longevity.

the stock 7m i think is 237hp after my upgrade i had it dynoed before tuning. i pulled 277hp and 280tq at the wheels on 7psi, then upped the boost to 15 and pulled some fuel out, and got 355/403
