almost sounds like one of those shops that thinks that there are bearings that go in the journals...
it's completely normal to have it on there, and is easily removed...but is pointless as more will be deposited and it will loosen the clearances...
easiest way to tell a open diff vs LSD is jack up one rear tire (chock the fronts!!), release tha e-brake and put it in neutral.
Try and turn the wheel, it will rotate the driveshaft if it's open (or really REALLY worn LSD)
dunno about the torsen diffs though...

the bolts and studs have different torque settings, overtorque and you break bolts, undertorque and it leaks...
make sure you clean the gasket surface well, and I flushed a ton of crap out of my block while I was there...
