Something that I should point out for all the newbies that might read this thread sooner or later - I absolutely would not suggest running this much boost without some serious tuning - UNLESS you happen to have a spare longblock sitting aroun waiting to go in, like I do. I've been trying to...
Sounds damn cheap to me. I just spent $800 getting my head worked on, the only parts involved were new valve seals. The headbolts, gasket, plugs and wires would put you well over your total, and you haven't figured in any labor yet.
They don't have the same head gasket issues. They aren't as easy to make power with - there wasn't a turbo option, and nothing beats intake, exhaust, turn up the boost for three easy steps to more power.
Ah, I see. Sorry, I thought you were referring to composite gaskets in general, not the ones still on 15 year old cars from the factory.
Mine was a new version - I had to replace it when I blew a rod bearing late last year, plus the very first thing I did when I bought this car was tear...
Hmm... I'm afraid I have to disagree on that, Ct. I've always torqued my composite gaskets to near 100 foot pounds, it's been fine for years - until I started running too much boost.
Could be detonation, could be just too much power. I doubt that I'm over the limit on the stock fuel system - my EGT can't be too high, as the pistons are still in prime condition. I've seen pistons in an engine running lean, and mine do not look as though they are getting hot enough to worry...
I'm going to try the brake spray + HKS trick next. I don't need it to last very long, I'm almost ready to build a new longblock. 6 months should about cover it.
Actually, I've been running it at that setting for a while - my usual method is to turn it up until it breaks, then fix it and turn it down some. I had no specific plans to hit a dyno anytime in the near future.
Loki, I'm trying to get it all back together in time for Supra Fest. Might...
20psi on a 57trim CT26 does not play well with others, unless they are entirely metal. 5 out of 6 of the cylinders had pushed the gasket out into the water jackets. Pushed enough pressure into the cooling system that it blew my rad hoses.
Tore it down today, if I'm lucky I'll have it...
You need the cooler with the block off plates. You need a working gasket on the cooler too, or it'll leak. Figuring out if that is the leak is easy - start with a cold engine, stuff your extra small ninja hand down behind the head and rev the engine a bit. You should be able to feel the...
