It could be a lot of reasons it runs a little rough not just plugs. Have you checked all the vacuum lines yet for any holes or that they are correctly hooked up? have you checked the afm to see if its excessivley dirty inside? Hows the timing , is it set right? How about plug leads? Any...

If you want to be ghetto you can buy a kit that is for thermo's and it has a temp sensor that slides into your radiator hose and you clamp the hose down over it.It has a temp switch you can adjust to your needs and is basic which is what it sounds like you need. Even comes with a wiring...

A stock boost 7mgte will be fine on the auto with a decent cooler and fresh oil treated with some compassion. lol. if you upgrade turbo or run high boost you may be up for a rebuild on the a340 which if done properly will hold good h.p, just ask IJ.
