A rebuild job on your current 7M should net you a better engine than the JDM version. However, the JDM swap will be cheaper. I doubt this is the mechanic's fault, it's probably related to the earlier BHG - if you get water in your oil from that, it's pretty easy to roast a bearing.

Or d) your oil pump drive shaft seal is gone. It's in between the cam seals and the front mail seal, but you have to pull the timing cover rear plate to access it.

Plugs are different, and the later ECUs have an internal altitude sensor, the earlier ones were external and mounted under the glove box.
