A little bit? Removing the crank pulley beforehand has a couple uses.
First off, when the engine is in the car, you can just put it in gear, set the ebrake, and use a breaker bar to crack off the bolt holding the main pulley on, which is at 195 foot pounds, by the way.

It was in quite a few of the car mags back in '87. The Mk3 was originally getting pretty ugly reviews due to the fact that it was slower than the model it replaced. I don't have the car mags any more, of course, if I kept all the mags I've bought over the years I'd need a house just for them...
Intake, complete exhaust from the turbo back, and a manual boost controller set to just under fuel cut is well known to give you ~320 crank hp, which is ~90 hp gain. So yes, the guy on the other site is pretty much dead on.

Very first thing you need to check is maintenance... old hoses need to be replaced, oil leaks need to be fixed, and so on.
Then I'd replace the entire exhaust, from the turbo back, (if you have the turbo model, of course) and the intake.

My biggest complaint about Toyota has been that they are not providing any support for the sports car enthusiast. If they change that, I don't care what they call it, I'll be happy.
