Sealed or open, the shelf life of the stuff is years.
In the engine, is another matter. I change mine at least once a year as a matter of course, so the stuff I have on the shelf never lasts that long.
Loosen the engine mounts, then drop the tailshaft a bit. Put about 4 feet of extensions on and feed them from the rear over the transmission to the bolts on the top.
