I don't know exactly how they happened, but due to the way they arc, I'd say it was done by someone as I can't see something rubbing against you car that way.

IIRC, when you put it back together, put your crank pulley timing mark on zero, and both your cams timing marks on the notches, then put on your belt. The only somewhat difficult thing to do is getting your cps back in lined up correctly.
It's a crap shoot. Turn up the boost if you feel froggy, but don't be suprised if you blow it. I up'd my boost to 8psi shortly after buying my 89, BHG the next day.

I doubt it's shifting into neutral. It's probably slipping caused by you disks being burnt. When you pulled the pan off, what was in it? Was it gritty? What color was the fluid?

Forget turbocharging it, go with a supercharger. It won't cost near as much because they can be bought off the shelf & and there will be little if any custom fab work required. On top of that, there is no lag time.
