If the body is clean and the interior is decent $400 is a great deal. Personaly I would fix it, drive it and get a 7mgte, 1jz, or 2jz build one of those and drop it in.

Aren't you dropping another motor in it soon? It would seem wastefull to put that much work into it if your just gunna swap it out in a few months. MHG thickness is determined by the amount of head material removed; the more removed the thicker the gasket needs to be.
FYI the temp gauge won't read crap if there isn't any coolant left for it to read. Sounds like classic BHG. Might just have some loose head bolts; a retorque could get ya a few more weeks...
If your not overheating/leaking/mixing fluids/smelling of fluids/or running bad, I would have to guess it to be condensation and that your are as paranoid about your supra as I am about mine.:naughty:
