deja vu, just had this exact conversation with a local M3 guy. The e46 crowd is starting to see what the MKIII crowd saw 7-8 years ago. Cheap parts followed by ignorant owners.
the 7/16 helicoil kit ran my $20-30. The short shank bit was $4-5 and the 7/16 coarse/fine thread studs where $2-3 a piece.
Here's my personal input... This was the first or second repair I did when i got the car. new to older cars like this I figured I'd helicoil with stock size and save...
invest in a decent set of crimpers and stirppers. The pins are damn cheap. Lay out the harness on a big piece of cardboard and tape it down so you know the path each wire you remove/splice needs to take. You'll need a coule of flavours of wire and pins. Shouldnt cost more then $200 to nearly...
90's are another funky year. Local buds 90 harness is different then my 89's and others 91's. The 86-88 are yellow plugs and 89-92 are grey should be taken with a grain of salt
might be a while, none seem to be running right at the moment ;)
The design of the internal WG looks very promising. i dont know how many WG setups I've seen that ignore the basics laid out by Corky Bells book.
LOL took a while to get motivated to put the motor together, AGAIN. Had to take a break from the supra life. Damn things will drive you over the edge faster then they do 0-60.
Id say take it for a nice long spin. Give it chance to redeem itself!
I suspected my 7m had a leaking headgasket...
^ that and condition and age of battery? short drives and idling do little for a recharge on the battery.
I'd take it out for a solid 1/2 hour to an hour drive. Short drives and idling till warm make it difficult to get all the condensation out. Not to mention its colder out now. Look at...
Isn't Bryan maloff (sp?) in the northern Georgia area?
IJ or Rich, when the new bearings are installed, is the bearing still round? Thinking out loud that if the bearing fits on the shaft before install, and doesn't after, the bearing is getting squeezed in the block. Does the force of...
any out of spec vavles I have ever had started ticking or making racket right at idle and never stopped until the engine noise drowned it out. the tick is also half speed. At lower rpms you can almost count each time that bucket and shim get hit by the cam. Also always sounded like it was...
you realize that you have the cams in, with the shims and buckets, and at least 4 open valves with the head sitting on a near flat surface right? It doesnt take much at all to bend a valve.
Rattle/knock was detonation most likely from old gas. (ignorant ears on my part) Small signs where found on plugs, head, piston and bores. Plan is to sleeve the block to keep the current pistons and tighten up the clearance a bit more. Going to open up the rods a bit to .0018-.0020 and cut...
