Ok so we are talking about filling gap between the top strip of the molding and the black strip it sits on and then painting it? Seems like a ton of work for not much result.

That's right, it has nothing to do with the cable. It's the little nylon gear inside the tail shaft. They have a tendency to wear out, but if you reach in the little hole where cable goes in and pull out the gear from your old trans and put it in your jdm...problem solved. Worst case...
