Although the engine is the best out of the 3 choices of diesels, I wouldn't go for it: -Weak drive train, especially the transmission -Weak front end parts. You'll be replacing brakes and tires before 30,000 miles. This comes from experience. :-)

Any way you look at it: -If you're serious about towing, buy a diesel. Im loyal to the GM's with the Allison transmission in them due to the fact the Allison is almost bullett proof. -If you're serious about hauling, buy a Featherlight. You'll pay for it, but they are the best trailers...

550's are a must with the Lex. The 550's can be run on the stock AFM, but you're going to be pulling mass amounts of fuel out. Run the Lex afm and be done with it. Chances are you're still going to need to pull fuel.
