When each piston moves down, it has to push the air in the crank case back out through that 1/2" vent.

Try this first.
There is the starter signal wire that comes out the back of the starter. 50% or more of the time, this is the "Dead starter, it just clicks, I hear nothing" problem.
Take the wire with connector off the back of the starter, and clean.
You stated that you have the catch can re routed back into the intake manifold, not the turbo intake. I know the stock 1j has a pcv off the intake cam, but it also should have a one way valve in the line. If you run the catch can into the intake manifold post throttle body, you're risking...
