The downpipe does not attach to the exhaust manifold. It attaches to the elbow. Unless you have an aftermarket setup, like a V-band or something.

EGR temp means the ECU is not reading the voltage that should be produced by the exhaust temp sensor when the EGR command is given.

You don't have to get out permanently. Just until it is easier for you. I bought my first in 94, second in 96, and got rid of it late in 97. Then in 2002, I picked up another one. By the way, I hardly do any mods to the car.
