The electronic controller blocks the air from the actuator. The same as a manual. A manual controller will bleed slightly. But I can tell you first hand the DrJonez MBC responds very fast. Quicker spool, no spike. Well, I spike from 13 to about 15, but I have an automatic.

If the crank portion of the ignition switch has a direct ground, or short to ground if you prefer, it would take power from the car. Path of least resistance.
Rust depends on where you live, not the type of car. There are plenty of rust free examples.
MKII looks really nice when in good shape. Picture this with a 7MGTE and a mild 350 rwhp. It would fly.
