Measure current with an AA battery? Uh, just start throwing parts at it ;)
Seriously, if you're going to work on cars you need to buy a decent meter and learn how to use it. It'll pay huge dividends when working on lots of things besides cars and spare you a lifetime of electrical frustration.
Could be a few things but it sounds like a bad connection at the ALT terminal. Because of how it's constructed the stud could even be loose inside the ALT. That it's all been messed with recently is suspicious. Measuring it will instantly tell you whether there's a problem there or not. Or you...
It's not supposed to do that ;)
Start by making sure it's clean and tight ie; disconnect the battery, remove the nut on the terminal, clean it and the stud up, and reinstall. Don't overtorque it. Before you do that you might want to measure the voltage between battery positive and first the ALT...
As someone who bought it new in 87 and has been driving it pretty much every day since I'd have to agree with what Grim and AJ said. If I didn't like the car the way Toyota made it I wouldn't have bought one. On the other hand Johnathan makes a valid point too. The real bottom line is it's just...
^ Right. It's not about making sense. It's about science. The car uses what's called a closed pressurized cooling system, in contrast to open pressurized or non-pressurized systems of old. As such the radiator is always kept filled to the brim. Unlike open pressurized systems (in which airspace...
Yep, I've always found it a pleasure to deal with the Grimster, one of the more rational people around here. Must be all that crack ;). And thanks for your input CRE. Nicely done...
Yeah, it should be pins 13 and 14 on that year. In fact I believe it's the black/reds shown just above his connection in the photo. There seems to be some changes in my prints versus the newer one but they both show BATT to be b/y and +B, +B1 to be b/r.
edit: Fwiw my TCCS test set/simulator...
You're welcome. I wasn't suggesting you were stupid. On the contrary I wish more here would make an effort to learn this stuff.
I don't see the stock wiring as being strange in one sense since driving with fogs only doesn't make much sense from a lighting standpoint and is illegal in most...
Practicing a little EE are we? ;)
I don't follow why you'd worry about forgetting to turn off the tails because auto off already takes care of them. That said your mod will work but the fogs will only be usable with the tails on. On the other hand, since you're feeding the fog light relay from...
