seriously? if you were going to open up an engine & take out the crank why not just get new main bearings? if they were original they been there for 20 + years. & idc if they look good, i still replaced all on my 5M.

Change spark plugs
change spark plug wires
check that the coil packs are grounded
change coil packs
check compression
if compression is good check the injectors, one might be dirty & isn't spraying well or might be electrically...

Could be from being extremely old? but then yet again idk how much pressure goes through the radiator hose.
In my Own Experience, my turbo's coolant hoses were original.. a week after the rebuild i blew one... Lost a gallon of coolant but didn't overheat. The hose split diagonally in two like...
cold start injector. My Mk2's went out & everytime i try to start it on cold, it sounds like a carburetor because i have to keep cranking it. Once hot it starts right up.
