As far as I know the NSS only affects the starter.
The selector switch is another matter though, I'm not sure how much info the ECU/ECT use from it.
Have you checked for Trans codes yet?
In sequence or in reverse sequence?
Hot or cold?
It's well worth spending the $$$ to have it checked for hardness and at least surfaced no matter which gasket you decided on.
(if it were me I'd go factory composite and make 100% sure not to let it detonate)
I rarely do this but this is my "understanding" so keep in mind I may not be correct.
The NSS is on the trans itself
The switch the OP unplugged is the Sector switch and on a a343e it sends a gear indicator signal to the dash (not sure if the ECT takes this info as well)
I believe the...
1) is about right ;)
2) Is the Power Steering Pump bracket it goes from the adjuster bracket with the slot to the block down near the pan
3) Looks like a VSV that bolts under the intake but it's hard to tell from the dark pic.
Yep :)
I don't tape anymore either just a single wrap every 6>10" and loose fitting convoluted tubing. (never thought about it before but it makes sense)
The most important section to get right is the seal to the bottom of the Radiator support panel, my car runs +5c if the 3 bolts there aren't installed and +8>10c if the cover is off.
(this is at 100>110 Kmh highway cruise)
