Yep my factory tach was never what you'd call accurate, I had it tweaked to work with the standalone so they got it +- 50 rpm but compared to the ECU tach it was slow to respond.
I tend to go for a very safe tune compared to a lot I see here, I also tend to spend long times at high rpm/boost during top end runs so don't like running my engines ragged.
Have ran lower temp T Stats in the past and from my experience about all they do is increase warmup time, if you do long hard pulls the cooling system will reach it's natural equilibrium (my car with the 500rwhp 7M was around the 91c mark on a 77c T-stat) dependant on the ambient temp as it can...
About 2 psi over the first bad bout of detonation.
Personally I find what I consider to be a safe tune on the dyno listening for incipient detonation then back it down 2psi and 2 degrees of timing from there as a safety margin.
