    Can't go much under 20 as the ground electrode deforms and you can't get a consistant gap/spark. There's something else going on here.

    A steel head gasket doesn't compress. The beads may flatten down but you don't measure it there anyway.

    Ahhh ok never had a car here with mirror heaters didn't realise they were on the same circuit and switched by the same switch. Only mentioned the hatch open thing as I noticed now and again mine won't draw current with it open so I'm assuming Toyota are using the striker as the ground path...

    Do you have power in the thick black wire under the doorsill plate? The switch has a built in timer, it may have failed.

    I use Castrol LMM Moly grease it's cheap and works well, been using it 25+ years now.

    Needs to be exact or slightly lower, if lower you can apply a smear of RTV along the cover to make sure it seals.
