Happens more often that you'd expect :(
A lot of times how they're fitted makes the difference, an old old school guy taught me to get them in with the minimal amount of hits possible as a lot of small taps removes the crush fit.

Are you running the GE Clutch with the matched 7 blade fan?
It might "work" but could be the difference on a car with a marginal cooling system, clogged rad blocked with leaves and bugs AC Condensor....
With the potential for cooling system disasters+7M I wouldn't risk it but that's just me.
Make sure you match the Clutch/Blades as the GE uses a 7 blade fan and a clutch that's softer than the one for the GTE 10 blade. (GE clutch=Blue, GTE= Brown/Orange)

Could probably either use Helicoils or Keenserts to add threads to pre89 Starters to make life easier.
I used to use a bunch of extensions and drop the rear mount and go in over the trans case up in the tunnel.
