On book 3 of the "Earths Children" series "The Mammoth Hunters", it's a rearead as I just got book #7, I also have Wizard and Glass on it's way from Amazon so will rear that soon as it arrives having reread the seris awhile back :)
Never seen a minimum thickness spec on either the head or the block but my "guess" would be 20 thou on each.
(I base this on the head I sawed into pieces and many blocks I've looked at and worked on)
You're assuming the block has never been machined, needs to be measured to verify, to answer that, no one would unless they were using GE pistons or wanted a big drop in compression.
10 thou off the head and a composite will be fine.
