i like to wrap the line tightley in many many layers of electrical tape. then i cut it as straight as possible with a hacksaw. you want to do it in one cutting session, dont keep stopping and starting over again. the idea is to have NO frayed edges and a straight cut.

its the wires, they are old. mine was like that too as i found out when i had to repair my wire harness from fire damage. open up the harness a little further back and the colors should brighten up. one of the wires is sheilded as well so be aware of that.

waste of time and IMO only clutters up the engine bay even more.
