Check ALL fuses. My radio went out in my subaru one day, I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Decided just to run another wire from a constant.
Checking fuses one day, I found the interior lamp fuse was blown. replaced it, and for the hell of it, checked to see if there was power...
You have some research to do. Your problems are common, save for the AC issue...
Spark plug galley: Your valvecover gaskets are leaking.
Rich: You probably have a boost leak. Pressure test the IC pipes.
Knock Sensor: The wiring is deteriorated. Search "KS Rewire" Shaeff or I can provide you...
Someone change the title of this thread to "nutswinging thread" :D
As far as the "best" you need to be the judge of that.
Check out the vendor's section here, there's a bunch of good guys here that support the community. MDC, 935, BIC, Driftmotion, etc.. etc...

Mine did that, would run fine, but youd have to reallllly baby it for a few miles.
Coolant was getting into the CC... my headgasket was seeping coolant after shutdown.

Start over.
Get matching year harnesses. Get an 86.5 ecu and harness. Related sensors, and so on.
There's a big wiring change in mid-89. You're much better off going with anything 88 and down.

Picked up the car for $100 with really bad rod knock. Actually drove it a few short trips as it was, knocking like a mofo.
Bought a 4A-GE out of the junkyard for $300 from an 86 MR2...
I like the interior Rajunz. The seats, minus the embroidered headrest, I'd have to look at twice before I figured out that's not stock. Good work.
Targa headliner's cool too. Not a huge fan of flames, but they're pretty good looking.
