Unfortunately, you will need to test each wire. Not every single wire, just the ones that get fed from that fuse. It's gonna suck, but it's the only way. Bare wires + very sharp dash bracing = electrical short.

Once you have it squared away to where it all works, start welding in some steel that will take the shape that the material you removed did, only modify it to what will fit with your setup. Just re-create the factory-type bracing, but in a fashion that will work with your modifications.

Pull the oil pan. On the crank it will be stamped "6M" or "7M" If it says "6M", it's an earlier 7MGTE. Fewer counterweights on the crank make it a less smooth running engine, but it has a higher rev limit stock (6750rpm) If it says "7M", it's the later design. It's got more counterweights on...
