My 1st bet would be the slave cylinder since you recently replaced the master, as well as apparently heard no catastrophic failure. So probably no hard parts failed. Have you pulled the inspection covers yet?

I love my macbook pro C2D. Thats probably a smidge out of your price range though. I recommend going with a normal macbook. Parellels is OK but you take a huge performance hit from running 2 OSes at once. I recommend bootcamp any day though which will allow you to run XP or Vista very easily...
