with the key in the ignition, clutch in, i turn the key and for a couple of seconds, sometimes three, at times four, nothing. no clicking, no dimming of lights. continue holding the key in start for those couple of seconds, it fires up. cranks up no problem. doesn't happen all the time...

so how were you able to keep your a/f @ 11.1:1?

what kind of aftermarket do you have? might look for a box that has that name on it. might look for a box that is just tucked up under the dash, maybe even zip tied to something. it should look out of place as it won't have a factory mounting place. if it has a starter defeat then it will...
