I re-measured no5 (main journal) and it's not what I originally stated. I must've gotten the edge of an oil hole or something. At any rate, it's pretty much the same as the rest of the journals.
The rod journal (or "pin" as it's referred to by Toyota) for number 6 is toast though - I measured...
I always thought this happened because decent rev limiters work by cutting ignition. So you blast out your fuel/air mix directly into the exhaust and when the next cycle fires, you get hot exhaust gasses that ignite the previous mixture.
Am I wrong?
Big ouch!!! All things being equal (and they usually aren't) with just the exchange rate, that's about $1300!
The car cost a bit less than twice that!
Time to start trimming costs.
Don't need a head gasket so subtract gasket kit and add misc gaskets, valve seals, etc... Say maybe $100...
My thoughts exactly - based on the condition of the valves/seats, it's looking like this motor has relatively few miles on it. I'm sure it was running like an absolute pig when it was pulled though! No idea what seals the prev owner used but if I find out, I'll be sure to give them the widest...
Today:
Got a bit done on the head. Pulled everything off, got all the valves out and measured head warpage (as well as can be expected before absolutely all traces of gasket are off. Also measured cam to shim clearance, which is again possibly moot as the valves were really dirty and...
Not sure on that one. You can definitely redo all the studs yourself but it might be piece of mind to just have the machine shop do it for you. It'd be a trivial bit of work for them and I'm sure getting the studs would be no big deal either. Depending on how close the machine shop is, it...
To the best of my knowledge, Ishino are OEM in Europe but not in the states. I'm not sure if that's a bad thing or not though.
Also, I've seen some side by side shots of the Ishino vs OEM (US) gaskets and apparently there's a bit more coating on the gasket (they're a blacker color vs the...
Cams are not constantly touching. When the valves are closed, there's a very thin space between the back of the lobe and the shim. This is what you're trying to achieve when/if selecting replacement shims.
Canadian - You sure it's not fuel injector noise? If you want to try a variant on the...
What do you make of that last set of photos Ian? It's definitely better than the first crank but I'm still a bit worried about the fact that the keyway is distorted.
It looks as though the channel is basically intact so if there's a decent key to fit in it and everything is torqued up...
I don't think I'm explaining it correctly. I've edited one of your pics to hopefully make it a little bit easier to "see" what I'm talking about. The two keyways should be identical and I've drawn a red line from the rear to the front to show how they at least look different in the pics. The...
It looks like they're from the crank. Is the front keyway actually wider than the back one? It certainly looks like a clean break in the pics - like the key tore a chunk off the shoulder of the keyway.
Uh oh... That keyway looks busticated man. If memory serves the front keyway and rear should look identical. It looks like the front one has a shoulder that's broken off. I hope it's an optical illusion from the pics you took!
Sorry, I just checked my engine pieces and the holes between the cylinders are definitely coolant and not oil. I would edit the pic but I'm off to work.
Apologies for any confusion!
