i think joes on the right track here... i believe with the correctly built valvetrain...and obvious supporting mods...the 7m crank can spin fine upwards of 8k...
i personally will most likely be taking a 7m crank and spinning it to about 7500-8k.... it really depends on a few other things im...

want to know what to do? pull it and drop it off a cliff...then get a 7m or a 1jz and drop it in and be ahppy with a REAL engine... the 1g is a crappy engine...
im thinking you did something to foul out the plugs or hooked something up wrong...i myself and i know of tons others who run the autolite 3923 coppers and ave great success with them...the only probelm is like bishop said...you basically need to change them every oil change...but hell...for 7...

hey make sure you have it hooked up to the right signal...ill bet its hooked up to the injector pulse signal and not the throttle signal... i did that too ;)

if its throwing that code something is wrong with the afm...make sure its plugged in for one...
if by chance you need another afm i have a couple so just let me know... ;)
did you check to see if all the cylinders were DRY...namely number 5...it is possible that there is a pool of oil or coolant in the cylinders which would raise compression significantly...
also with that much variance im thinking its time to rip it down...
