171F isn't really running too hot...even 190 if the conditions are right. You said you parked the car and the thermometer read 190? Was the engine running when you got this number?

The hybrids don't get the greatest MPG, that's for sure. If you want good mileage, get a diesel...I believe the VW Lupo (diesel) gets around 70MPG. Too bad it's not sold in the US. :(

You MAY be able to fix it with 3M Heavy Duty rubbing compound followed by a few other glazes and waxes...but if the clear coat is completely gone (it usually is) then the clear layer must be wet sanded off, and the undercoat polished. You will have to wax it a lot to maintain it...but it will...
You can make that nose panel look nice again...needs to be wetsanded and compounded...I've done it to several local MK3's that had the same problem.
