That's almost exactly how this street was, except I kept mine in 2nd and low RPM's to get the deepest sound possible. I truly love the way the RSR-GTII sounds.
You may want to try placing a stethescope (sp?) up to the bell housing to see if it's coming from in there. How fast of a tap is it? How many times do you hear the tap in one second?
JJ has clearly told you what you need to do FIRST before you go out and spend more money on something that you may not need. Diag jumper to test fuel system = FREE. Going out and buying parts that you don't know are bad yet = NOT FREE.
Those injectors are going to melt a piston in short order. Do a search on the problems people have had with venom injectors. An even better tip: Don't buy any fuel injectors, no matter what brand off of ebay UNLESS the seller is a licesensed vendor of the company they are selling the injectors...
I've got the money set aside ;). I'm committed pending final specs of pistons (I have patience, this could very well be a month or two in the making granting trial and error time from Probe).
I think I had read on here somewhere's (maybe a post by Ian) that coating on piston skirts really don't last that long... Just something I figured I'd thow out there, I'll search to be sure...

Yeah, jdub stumbled upon the Green GC and found an easy way to see if it's the Green or Gold, if the production date on the bottom of the qt is '04 or older, then it's the Green. If it's newer than that, then it's Gold. All of mine were made in '06. That's why I said they were damn near...
Penzoile Platinum 5W-30 is on the top of my list as a good group III, that's what I run in my DD and has very good properties for a hydrocracked oil. It sounds like jdub is erring on the safe side of things by going for a syn oil in his oil cooled only turbo for peace of mind ;).
