Definitely check the spare tire compartment for rust. Leaky rear-hatch seals will cause rust to build up in there. I think for what you're getting, go for it. Like te72 said though, make sure you have a separate daily driver to depend on.
If you want a reliable Sunday cruiser, just rebuild the 7M with new rods and pistons and it'll treat you well. As long as you check the fluids often. Low oil on the 7M is what causes them to blow up. This way, when you rebuild the motor you can be satisfied that the work done to the car is how...
For the AT flush it would be a good idea to do it if you don't know when it was flushed last. Make sure you use Toyota ATF, the tranny tends to not really like any other fluids that I know of (correct me if I'm wrong? especially if anybody used a fluid that the tranny liked beside Toyota ATF)...
I bought my 89 last year to be my daily. Back in April I spend $6.5K to swap in a 1JZ and have never regretted it one bit. The 7M for my wasn't as reliable and so I took it out. Ever since April I have spent a total of $3 to keep my 1JZ running (aside from the usual oil change, etc.) and that...
It cost me 6.5K to get my 1JZ swapped into my MK3. I went with a standalone though hence why it cost me a bit more. Definitely go with the JZ car, I've spent a total of $3 to keep my 1J on the road and that was to replace a worn out heater control valve with a brass coupling. I'm super happy I...

You're gonna love the 1J. It's a completely different engine compared to the 7M, and boy is it ever addictive. I instantly fell in love with my 1J when I got my swap done and got my car back (and until then I hadn't ever driven or gotten a ride in a 1J car).
Make sure you spend the money and...
I don't change it much. My standalone was tuned @ 14PSI and that's what I run the majority of the time. Yeah every now and then I'll crank the boost up a couple pounds but I tend not to as my stock twins are on their way out. But once I go single I'm just gonna set and forget it and just take it...
^^ I'm actually thinking of getting my sawblades stripped for next year. My powder coat is starting to come off and it doesn't look that great. Plus I love the look of stripped sawblades.
