Well good luck. I suggest you make sure the wiring is top notch...all of my problems (sans the wheel bearing) have all been wiring related. It use to be my daily and it was pretty frustrating to break down on the highway every other week...tow it home...and find a broken or melted wire...or...

Working on you car should be fun and enjoyable and it should NOT put you into debt. Project cars are things that you throw EXTRA money at...working on the car can be a substitute for other forms of entertainment (movies, going to the bar, etc.) then the money you save by not doing those...
These cars are already front heavy...moving weight to the back will improve the weight distribution...you probably don't want to lighten the back any more than it already is
Mine does the same thing into reverse...have to go 2nd to Reverse then there is no problem.
Does the thud into first happen when you are stopped? or are you still rolling slightly when it happens?

Im pretty sure you need to activate you account. When you initially signed up you should have recieved an email with instructions on how to activate/verify your account.
When I was getting insurance on my 87 with ABS, once I typed in the VIN it knew the safety features it had...ABS and factory anti-theft w/ alarm.
And I'm not saying he will have a hard time getting insurance...they will never know he took it off...they don't inspect. But if something happens...
Adding a cage increases safety...not sure how this is the same thing as removing a safety feature...
I'm not saying you wont be able to get insured but like others have said if something happens you may be held more liable since you altered factory safety features...god forbid someone gets...
