now that I have my pistons clean, I decided to take some real measurments. good news! with a stock head, and stock block, with a stock headgasket and stock cams.. the engine becomes interference when a total of 1.47mm of material is removed from the block and head.
I used my vernier caliper...
some discolouration...it looks and feels smooth. what appears to be pitting is not.
does this look unacceptable to you? acceptable being less than perfect.

as nick said you should have an idea visually and plastigauge is good to confirm. but my argument still stands.
I think it goes without saying this is exaggerated.
