exactly.
the techtom was some good stuff back then....but there are a myriad of issues w/it.
1. you're relying on someone to tune it for you....w/o having your car there. you explain your mods, they burn a chip that they think will suffice. not the best idea.
2. cost.
3. availability-...
that's the essence of the TCCS- open loop doesn't happen until ~70%, ~3500 RPM. makes for nightmarish tuning @ part throttle if you have a turbo that spools quickly...
while i am hardly "the expert" i do know a fair bit and have been helping bob w/the MKIII development.

simple: search and learn- knowledge is power.
before going for more power, fix ALL your issues- oil leaks, poor maint, cracked hoses, etc. you'll find that the engine lasts a lot longer that way.
after that, follow the tried and true steps:
-FULL 3" exhaust
-intake
-up boost to just under FCO...
