When I ran the Maft in AFC mode it was an "Install and Drive" type of deal because you're not controlling much in that mode. Only AFR's basically. It took me about 10 minutes to get my desired AFR's dialed in.
Speed Density mode is more complex and naturally takes longer to dial in...
I have the HKS Super Dragger and it next to the Tanabe (friend's car) was a tad quieter at idle.
Both are great choices; but, I prefer the look and quietness of the HKS.
In my opinion, the biggest reason the Maft Pro gets bad reports is because of the users that don't want to learn. They want something to install, then press the 'Auto Setup' button, and drive in to the sunset with fully tuned car.

The Maft is as close to a standalone as you're going to get in a Piggyback setup. I can vouch for the stability of the Maft. The Timing Control is still being tweeked; but, the rest of it is solid.
What kind of power did you make? Can you post up a dyno sheet? I'd love to see...

I certainly didn't intend to start anything; but, since we're here...another thing to consider is the number of 7M's vs the 1J's here in the states. All we've had were 7M's to break! As a result the 1J's started getting swapped in...
#1 - AFM. No MAF.
#2 - Just because the CEL isn't on doesn't mean that there is no code.
#3 - Like others have said.....boost leak and venting to atmosphere are your problems.
