The cost of parts alone will kill you. You will need the skills to fix it yourself, your friend will get sick of working on it. Even then though the car is still a money pit. Also, the brakes went out on it this morning when my dad went to take it to the interior shop. It made it to 5 days...
Everything was fine fine as of my last post. I have owned it for over 4 years, and I just got through my first 1000 miles over the weekend. Also, my steering wheel fell off while driving on Sunday. Days since Supra has broken: 2

Do not count on a Supra as your daily driver. Ever. Mine has rarely made it more than 100 miles without needing something fixed. I paid $1600 for mine and it needed an engine. I spent 4K before it ever drove on the road.

I'm planning to have the seats re-covered in my 87 Supra with gray cloth interior. Unfortunately, the shop that I took it to is unable to find the fabric. I'm wondering if anyone here has either a source for a match to the original fabric, or a suggestion for a similar fabric that will work. As...
It should be a Karmen Vortex...the fact that you don't know this tells me you shouldn't be working on a modified car. And by working on, I do mean this:
Don't screw with something you are so clueless about.

Do the following tests:
Coolant system pressure test
Compression test
Cylinder leakdown test
These should help you narrow it down. My money is still on the head gasket.

Everything I have read tells me the MAFT Pro is as close as you can get to stand alone from a piggyback. Either something is wrong with your setup, or the person tuning didn't know what they were doing. But using a piggyback on a piggyback just sounds stupid.

Some topics to look into:
Have the timing case bolted to the block so they are decked together.
Have the timing belt tensioner torqued down to specs when the cylinders are bored. Not doing may cause low compression on cylinder 1.
Upgraded bearings are good insurance.
Shim the oil pump...
Don't borrow money you don't have to, your older self will thank you. I have lived by that advice, with the exception of student loans. I'm not even 25, and I am completely debt free. I have a good job, I can save money because its not all going to debts I owe, and I can take a couple paychecks...
