Is there anywhere other than the dealership that I can get a woodruf key? I went to the auto parts store and they sell that variety pack of keys... and I bought one. :3d_frown: None of them really have a good fit. They thickest one still wobbles a little on the pulley. Do they ones you order from the Toyota dealership wobble a little too, or is it just this cheap ass pack of keys I bought do that?

Please send the money for a toyota one is only two dollors and fifty cent's
compared to what could be big time damage to the engine which will be more than two dollors and fifty cents follow the pirate's tip:"AHRR" matey

This is what I wanted to know. Yeah, they look cheap as hell. I don't know why I bought them. Looks like I'll be on my way to the dealership... Monday.

BTW, how would a cheapie woodruf key for the crank pulley do big time damage to the engine assuming it broke? Just curious.

Based off what I've seen in the TSRM and seen in pics here on SM, the timing gear and the pulley have seperate keyways, so at least if the crank pulley key broke, you wouldn't lose your timing.

If the crank pulley key breaks, and assuming the bolt isn't tight enough to the point where the crank pulley rotates independently from the crankshaft, you would lose the water pump, fan, alternator, and power steering. If, say, you leave the car idling and this happens, for example, it would overheat and drain the battery.

If this happens under a heavy load condition (WOT, revving high, etc, which seems to me to be the most likely event for it to fail), and you happened to not be watching the gauges or gauge cluster, you'd likely overheat the motor quickly, as well as kill the battery.

Basically, go cheap on this inexpensive key, and you screw yourself over.

I am going to get the Toyota keys for the good fit. It was my understanding that woodruff keys were designed to break/shear in the event that one of your accessories locks up. This happens so that it doesn't put any strain on your timing chain/belt, or slow it down abruptly while the engine is running. I would think that could make your timing jump which would be bad if you had an interference engine. Maybe I was wrong this whole time.
